Bynge Privacy Policy

Effective October 14, 2026

Bynge is a free app for ranking the films and TV shows you watch and sharing your taste with friends. It is operated by an individual developer (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what information Bynge collects, how it is used, and the choices you have.

The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work. We don’t sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.

Information we collect

Account information. Your email address and password (stored securely as a one-way hash, which we can’t read) to create and sign in to your account.

Profile information. Your username, and optionally a display name, bio, and profile photo.

Content you create. The titles you log, mark as watched, or add to your watchlist; your rankings and scores; the head-to-head comparisons you make; notes you write; reactions; and the accounts you follow or block.

Reports. If you report an account or content, we store the report, the reason you chose, and what was reported.

Notification token. If you allow notifications, your device’s push notification token, so we can deliver notifications you’ve turned on. You can turn notifications off at any time in iOS Settings or in Bynge.

Letterboxd imports. If you import from Letterboxd, the export file is read on your device. Only the matched titles, years, and ratings are saved to your account; the file itself is not uploaded.

Anonymous usage and diagnostics. Unless you turn off Settings → Share Anonymous Usage Data, Bynge sends anonymous events such as “a ranking was completed” or “the app crashed”, with coarse details like whether it was a film or a TV show. These events never include the titles you rank, your notes, your username, email, or account. They’re tied only to a one-way hash of a random device identifier, so they can’t be connected to you or your account.

Information we don’t collect. We don’t collect your location, contacts, browsing history, advertising identifier, or any data for advertising. Bynge contains no advertising SDKs.

How we use information

We don’t sell or rent your personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising.

What other people can see

Your username, display name, profile photo, and bio are visible to other signed-in Bynge users, as are the accounts you follow.

By default, your rankings, watch activity, notes, and reactions are visible to other signed-in users. If you turn on Private Account in Settings, your rankings, activity, and notes are visible only to you and to the people you follow.

People you have blocked can’t see your activity in their feed, and you won’t see theirs.

Who we share information with

We use a small number of service providers to run Bynge:

These providers process data only to provide their services to Bynge.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the safety of our users or the public, or to enforce our Terms.

How long we keep information

We keep your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, rankings, logs, notes, reactions, follows, reports you’ve made, notification token, and profile photo are permanently deleted from our live systems immediately. Residual copies in our hosting provider’s backups are removed within 30 days.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live (for example California or the European Economic Area), you may have additional rights, such as the right to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any right, email us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Your sign-in session is stored in the iOS Keychain. Access to data is restricted at the database level, so each user can change only their own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.

Children

Bynge is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we’ll notify you in the app before they take effect. The effective date above shows when the policy last changed.
